Project LBZ Part 3

September 2015 Build, Duramax Jeffrey V. Shirts

Grandpa Truck

Diesel Tech magazine’s publisher affectionately refers to Project LBZ as the “grandpa truck.” It’s a nice homage to the gentleman he bought the truck from, but it also belies his desire to transform what was once old into something new. Project LBZ has been about breathing new life into old models and modernizing them. With the engine bursting with new life and new ponies wanting to race along the highway, it was time to take the truck from the previous decade into our own.

Solutions To Old Problems

One of the first parts that we added to the engine at Custom Auto was a CAT fuel filter. With the addition of the DRP low-pressure turbo for the compound turbo design, the CAT filter was disconnected and set aside until after the engine was returned to the compartment. With the engine replaced, Custom Auto quickly fabricated and rigged a bracket design that lifts the CAT filter out from beneath the engine to be mounted above the engine to the compartment wall. It was a simple fix, and one that Custom Auto has used for their own dyno trucks to produce incredible horsepower.
