Project LBMC: Oil Bypass Filtration

Dialysis for your truck

June 2011 Installs

In the past we have purchased oil analysis kits for laboratory testing for $33 per sample from Polaris Laboratories. However, we later found that we could get the same lab testing kit from Staveley Laboratories when buying it through Filtration Solutions for $19.50 because they buy the testing kits in large quantities. You put some used oil in the bottle, mail it to the lab and they send you the analysis results. When using Staveley Labs, Filtration Solutions will also receive a copy of the analysis report and they'll call you to discuss the results of the test.

Installation of this system was easy. It took us just more than an hour to install. Normally, on the Dodge application, the oil feed line to the bypass filter comes from one of the extra oil ports above the spin-on filter. But because we have a compound turbo setup, the kit used an oil galley port on the driver's side of the engine block. The oil feed line connects to the oil inlet on the filter housing and feeds into the housing on the outside of the filter element. All of the dirty oil is pushed through the element, to the center of the cartridge where the cleaned oil is pushed up through the outlet. From the outlet, the oil travels through a return line and back into the engine through a billet aluminum cap that is included in the kit. From there, the oil travels down through the engine internals and back into the sump.

The FS-2500 mounts in the engine compartment in front of the air intake horn. If the application doesn't allow for under-hood mounting, there is a kit that will mount the unit on the frame rail, under the truck.
