Compound Turbo

It was now time to add more power to our build. According to the adage, one psi increase in boost will increase horsepower by three percent. We wanted to push the engine to a target of 650hp; therefore we knew we would have to tackle both the turbo setup while reinforcing the transmission. In a compound turbo setup, the low-pressure and larger turbo feeds into the smaller, high-pressure turbo to increase the boost and spooling of the stock turbo. Opting for a compound turbo design, we went with an Alligator Compound Turbo kit from Deviant Race Parts. It uses a S475 BorgWarner turbo that is able to produce up to 750 horsepower, with an aFe Power cold air intake filter that we used to round out the air intake of the truck. By forcing compressed, turbocharged air from the larger, low-pressure turbo, the stock, high-pressure turbo is able to compress a large quantity of air, increasing the produced boost.

Upon opening and inspecting the parts, James Brendle, owner of Custom Auto, installed the turbo in record time; however, first he to remove the Sinister CAT Fuel Filter he had previously installed. The Sinister CAT Fuel Filter was installed over the location of the original stock fuel filter, but the new turbo set up required the DRP turbo to occupy the same space. We were forced to remove the fuel filter entirely until after the engine is completely reinstalled.

Started in 2009 and located in Hayden, Idaho, DRP focuses on increasing reliability of late model diesel engines, and offer a wide range of engine parts. Headquartered just down the road from DRP, Alligator Performance is one of the largest aftermarket diesel parts companies in the world, and continues to grow both physically and in its product offerings.
