Diesels On The Mountain

A Trifecta Weekend

August 2011 News, Cummins, Duramax, PowerStroke Brady L. Kay

Most of us would be thrilled to attend a sled pull, or a dyno testing competition or possibly even a truck-only drag racing event this weekend. So when ATS Diesel Performance gave us the heads up on how we could actually combine all three into one fun-packed weekend, they didn't have to tell us twice.

This diesel fanatic trifecta weekend, also known as the Diesels On The Mountain Truck Fest, was once again held in the great state of Colorado. ATS Diesel, located in Arvada, Colo., went to great lengths to organize and help produce a weekend like no other.

Friday

It all started on Friday, August 5 at the Adams City Fairgrounds in Brighton with a NSPA-sanctioned sled pull sponsored by Nitto Tire. A total of 40 trucks ran the final event that night, but the Diesel Work Stock category was by far our favorite. Colter Hess took top honors with his Dodge 2500, just coming up a little shy of a full pull with a 293-foot, 9-inch run to the crowd's delight. Rounding out the top three was Jason Velder (287.09) in a GMC and Mike Sulley (284.06) in a Dodge.

Another fun class is the 2.6-inch (Turbo) Street Stock pull. Rowdy Bydalek was easily a crowd favorite in his Dodge, appropriately named Rough N Rowdy. His impressive 312-foot, 8-inch pull earned him top bragging rights, which was 7 feet further than his closest competitor, Derek Temple is his Bad Behavior Chevy.

All competitors and spectators were invited. Classes ranged from stock trucks to heavily-modified dedicated pullers. The 2011 sled pull was co-sponsored and sanctioned by NSPA (National Sled Pullers Association) and featured the NSPA's pulling sled which is one of the newest and latest technology sleds in the country. Four classes were available to pullers including: Work Stock, 2.6" /66mm turbo, 3.0" /76mm turbo, 3.8" /96.5mm turbo, and Modified (open).

Saturday

With the adrenaline from the night before just starting to wear off, we were once again fired up when we headed to ATS Diesel headquarters for its dyno event. Drivers were given the option to test either inside the facility or outside on the dyno provided by Haller's Repair, which meant the action never slowed down.

Dodge was well represented at this event, especially on the under 900hp outside dyno where Devin Gridley in his Dodge took first place (794.18hp/1498.64 torque). Inside it was Dimitri Millard in his Chevy 2500 that put up some unbelievable numbers that you needed to see to believe. In his 2001 Chevy the Highland, Utah-native put up 1387.80hp and 2497.70 torque for top honors. Nearly 50 trucks competed for prizes on this day, see final results below.

Sunday

The action didn't slow down on Sunday, that's for sure. The Cummins Rocky Mountain Truck Fest at the Bandimere Speedway in Morrison was a diesel enthusiasts dream. Vendors packed the top of the racetrack, while the fierce competition heated up below.

The drag racing may have been the highlight of the weekend, or at least the perfect way to end it. In the Pro Diesel class, Jerimiah Montgomery from Pampa, Texas, blew the competition away hitting a top speed of 132.93 mile per hour with a 10.467 quarter-mile time. While Millard, who had taken first in the ATS Diesel dyno event the day before had a similar top speed, his time of 11.023 seconds put him just behind Montgomery.

Spectators saw some of the most unique and detailed vehicles in the truck genre. Many of the country's fastest trucks were there to lay down impressive quarter mile times. As with Saturday, Sunday's competition and spectator opportunities were open to everyone.

Drag racing trucks were requested to have either upward-firing exhaust stacks, or use a temporary exhaust turn-up pipe for the event. This change was made at the request of the track which must manage issues presented by smoke from trucks that can damage track property and disqualify racers due to issues with the timing light system. Clamp-on exhaust turn-up kits can be acquired by calling ATS directly.
