Project LBMC

Stage 6: Better Air

Published in the August 2009 Issue August 2009 Build, Cummins

With regards to other updates to our project truck, we've been running recapped tires on this truck for about 45,000 miles. As the tires wore, we felt increased tire wobble and noticed some early signs of tread separation on the steer tires. We weren't comfortable with risking a tire failure, so we've replaced our tires with new rubber.

We found a Goodyear tire with an aggressive mud/snow tread with a 16 ply H rating. It's called the G164. It comes in a 255/75 22.5R. We've only logged about 1,500 miles on these tires, but the ride so far, well, it is a big improvement. We notice little to no tread flex or tire wobble. The tires are stiff with 105 psi in them, but they feel great with a load on them. We'll keep you posted on how these tires wear and the rate at which they wear.

After installing the fuel upgrades and R700 turbo kit, we broke the stock output shaft on the transmission. The power going through this drivetrain, combined with the large wheels and tires we're running means upgraded shafts are necessary. We have since upgraded the input shaft, intermediate shaft and output shaft with billet shafts.
