Six-Five Revive

Diesel tuning before GM went Duramax

Published in the August 2008 Issue August 2008 Column

As we all know, having a well-built diesel engine is great but it won't make much more power without more fuel. To handle this part of the equation they used a Max-E-Tork Prom HP4 performance program, a set of high-output fuel injectors and heavy-duty fuel lift pump, all from Heath Diesel. This upgraded prom will get all the fuel that pump is capable of dishing out along with giving the vehicle the ability to reach out in the timing curve to make use of the new fuel charge without creating excessive exhaust smoke.

With all that new fuel the motor was going to need more boost. A factory 6.5L makes about 6 to 8 lbs of boost pressure; with the addition of a Turbo-Master adjustable wastegate control they were able to get that number to 15 lbs. This might not seem like a lot of boost when you see a Cummins making 60 to 90 lbs, but the 6.5L has a much higher compression and an indirect injection system. This allows these trucks to run much less boost and still run clean. The intake was finished off with an AFE Stage II air intake system.
