Increasing The Flow

We spoke with Beans and decided for Project Re-Stroke some Stage I injectors would get us right where we wanted to be performance-wise. Beans modifies the internals of the stock injectors to flow 160cc of fuel. By increasing the ccs flowed and keeping the stock nozzle, the Stage Is will be as tame as a stock with no chip but offer huge gains with the addition of some performance chip tuning. Beans told us we could expect up to 140 hp over that of a stock truck with these injectors.

To take full advantage of the new Stage I injectors the pcm programming needs to be adjusted some, so Beans also sent one of its 6-position adjustable chips. The multi-position chip allows you to switch from performance programs on the fly as the need arises. Beans says this setup could produce more than 350 hp to the wheels with the right supporting mods. (Check out Diesel Tech, Volume 2, Issue 1, page 66 for 7.3L injector install tips.)

With the additional fuel added to the truck through the Beans injectors and chip we now need to look at getting more air in and out of the motor. All that new fuel is useless unless you have the proper amount of air to help burn it. We should also note that the added fuel will also raise exhaust gas temperatures, so some things need to be done to keep those temps within safe limits, allowing the new power to be used to its full potential.

In order to improve airflow to help burn all that new fuel we chose to install an aftermarket turbocharger. The stock turbo on the OBS Powerstroke is adequate for those little 98cc injectors but with the new Beans Stage Is it could use some upgrading. So we again talked things over with Beans Diesel and decided their D66 direct replacement turbo for the OBS Powerstroke would be perfect for our horsepower goals. The D66 turbo from Beans is the first true direct bolt-on high performance turbo for the 1994 through early 1999 7.3L Powerstrokes.
