Diesel Fuel Additives

Q—How does extreme change in the weather affect diesel fuel—going from a very cold winter to a very hot summer?

If you are not running a winter blend or winterized diesel fuel, gelling may occur in colder conditions.  Red Line offers RL ANTI-GEL to help transition from summer diesel into winterized diesel.

Winter blend or winterized diesel can be run in the summer, but the vehicle’s efficiency will be lower than if running Summer Diesel or #2.

Q—Do these temperature swings affect the consistency of diesel fuel?

In colder climates, during fall heading into winter, you could start to see the performance of your diesel reduced if you purchased fuel from the exact same station. Fuel stations start blending summer and winter diesel together as the temperatures change to avoid issues with customers’ vehicles. How a station introduces either winter blend or winterized diesel is not regulated, so performance consistency may vary.

Winter blend is the blending of #2 diesel with #1 (kerosene) by some percentage. For winterized diesel, station treats #2 diesel with additives. Some diesel owners do this on their own as well. Red Line offers Winterized 85 PLUS Diesel Fuel Catalyst for this purpose.

Q—Are there types of additives which work better in warm conditions? In cold conditions?

During the summer you may consider using 85 Plus Diesel Fuel Catalyst and WaterWetter for your cooling system. During the winter you may consider using RL Anti-Gel or Winterized 85 Plus Diesel Fuel Catalyst.

Q—Are additives that prevent diesel fuel from gelling ineffective in warmer conditions?

Cold flow improvers provide no benefit in warmer conditions. Cetane improvers and detergents work at all temperatures.

Q—What are the primary benefits of using diesel fuel additives?

Redline’s 85 Plus Diesel Fuel Catalyst is designed to compensate for ultra-low sulfur fuels. It offers better fuel combustion and fuel system lubrication. It provides faster ignition, reduced detonation and smoke, and improved efficiency. Its powerful high-temp detergents clean fuel injectors. It also lubricates o-rings and seals to increase injector pump life and reduce ring friction. It contains cetane booster for improved performance.
