Obviously, every truck make and model has one of these, but the problem seems to happen a little more frequently to this particular year of Duramax. A friend of the magazine happened to have just such a truck that was having some issue, so we decided to lend him a hand and document the process.
Fixing this problem is a pretty straightforward process and not necessarily all that difficult, depending on your mechanical skills, but it is a little time consuming. As stated above, it’s a small part and would normally be easy enough to fix, but of course it’s buried in the engine a little bit, so a fair amount of disassembly is required to access the FPR. Our replacement FPR came courtesy of Engineered Diesel. They sell the regulator by itself, but you’re going to need to replace the O-rings and gaskets anyway, so you may as well get their set that includes those pieces with it.
