Fuel Injection
Now that we had the new intake, chip and exhaust installed, we needed to make sure the engine was being supplied all the fuel that it needed. If not, we would run the risk of damaging the fuel system itself.
We started out by changing out the stock nozzles for 50hp injector nozzles from Dynomite Diesel Performance. These particular nozzles were recommended by Ryan because of their reliability and ability to run very clean.
“There are some nozzles out there that are just really dirty and smoke real bad and make the truck run inconsistently,” says Ryan. “The guys at Dynomite know how to fine tune the nozzles so they run really clean and very smooth.”
The next part of the fuel system we upgraded was the lift pump. We went with a lift pump from Air Dog to make sure we had an adequate flow of fuel. This was important because we did not want to risk damaging the injection pump by starving it of fuel.
As for the old injection pump, we had nothing but troubles. On our way down to RKL Diesel, the truck kept going into limp mode because of an internal timing failure with the pump. We replaced the old with a new Bosch VP-44 injection pump from Certified Injection in Sale Lake City, Utah.
Certified Injection is known for having one of the best VP-44 test stands in the country and the proof really is in the pudding. Power delivery is now more engaging, with an added increase in fuel economy and reduced temperatures.
