The Honey Badger Part 6

Wrapping it all up

April 2014 Build Lee Lovell

Letting Good Air In

For the first part of the build, we focused on how air was getting in and getting out. By focusing on this first, we were able to get the things done that help lower EGTs and help the engine get the air it needs.

For getting that air in, we choose an S&B Stage 3 cold air intake system. This was a great fit for the Honey Badger because it is a cold air intake which results in lower EGT by avoiding going through areas that generate heat. We also really liked that the filter was washable.

Installation was trouble-free and took about 20 minutes to complete. The kit replaces every part of the intake from the turbo all the way to the box.

Once that air hits the engine though, we wanted to change the way the ECU dealt with it. For that, we went with the Edge Attitude CTS. One of the biggest features of this unit to us is the display: a 4.3-inch, full color display that allows you to monitor a wide variety of parameters and change engine tunes on the fly.

Also, one of the biggest reasons Ryan recommends this to owners of 1998.5 to 2002 Cummins is the ability to monitor lift pump pressure on the display.

To get that air out, we went with a 4-inch Turboback kit with muffler from MBRP to replace the originally factory exhaust. The inch larger diameter of the exhaust means free-flowing exhaust and lower EGTS. Plus, it sounds great too.
