Parrot ASTEROID

Published in the August 2012 Issue August 2012 Build

This single-DIN stereo is fantastic for those who need to stay connected. This unit is built around the Android operating system, the same software that is found on a lot of Smartphones today.

This means it includes apps such as Weather for checking the weather, Maps for finding points-of-interest and navigating to them and Wikango for real time traffic and speed trap information. An available subscription-based app called TextFriendly will allow you to speak and send text messages without having to look at your phone.

A great feature for safety is this stereo's ability to understand voice commands. Press the voice button next to the jog wheel and say a command such as for dialing a person on your phone's contact list or changing the current song to your favorite artist.

As far as inputs are concerned, there are four USB inputs on the back of the unit for connecting anything like a thumb drive, a Smartphone or even a 3G internet dongle. You can also connect an iPod and navigate through your music collection on the large 3.2-inch color LCD. The faceplate is detachable as well.
