Project Toy Hauler

Making a Perfectly Good Road Warrior Even Better

Published in the July 2011 Issue July 2011 Ask The Expert

We're in the early stages of a killer highway toy hauler truck. We're taking an F-450 and making a few modifications that will enhance its abilities as a road warrior.

First, no self-respecting heavy-duty truck pulling a 36-foot gooseneck enclosed trailer can get very far on a small fuel tank. So our first upgrade is going to be pulling out the stock fuel tank and replacing it with a 65-gallon tank from Titan Tanks. The new Ford tank is designed with the latest software to fit beneath the truck and fill every void possible to maximize fuel capacity. And the latest design from Titan uses all the stock venting and sending unit hardware, so installation has never been easier. We're also adding the optional tank shield to protect the underside of the tank from the truck's many dirt road excursions.

Plus we're running a set of bolt-on replacement wheels from Vision Wheel. The Hauler Dually wheels accent the truck and give it a look that will better match the finished project than just running stock wheels.
