Checking the Differential Fluid

Published in the July 2011 Issue July 2011 Ask The Expert

How do you check the fluid level in your truck's differential? Crawl on the ground, remove the fill plug and use a finger to dip into the fluid? Or do you crawl on the ground and remove a dipstick from an aftermarket cover?

Wouldn't it be nice to check the fluid level and the condition of the fluid at a glance? Well, now you can with this exclusive Mag-Hytec cover with an integral sight glass from Geno's Garage.

The cover fits 2003 to current Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Turbo Diesel trucks with 14-11.5 American Axle differentials. (Geno's Garage calls it the American Axle Gear Cover (AAGC), or the at a glance cover).

Just like the standard Mag-Hytec covers, it has magnets at the fill and drain plugs as well as a 1/8 NPT fitting on top of the cover that you can use to install a temperature sensor. A rubber O-ring seal is cast into the mating surface of the cover to seal it against the axle housing.

The fluid capacity is increased from the stock cover's 7.6 pints to almost double at 14 pints. The increase in lubricant and the cooling fins on the cover help to dissipate heat.

The AAGC cover is available exclusively at Geno's Garage, who has been selling parts and accessories for Dodge Turbo Diesel trucks since 1996. Its inventory covers 1989-2011 trucks.
