There are three basic elements to horsepower: air, fuel and heat. From the OEM's, many engines produce a similar amount of horsepower and torque. That's because these manufacturers are not strictly focused on those numbers; when designing engines for over the road use, they must take into account an enormous number of other factors, including emissions, load capabilities, fuel consumption, environment, and how the engine is going to be used, just to name a few factors.
