DT Tested: PML Cast Differential Cover

Published in the October 2008 Issue October 2008 Products

There are plenty of reasons why not to put a new differential cover on your truck, but the reasons why you should outweigh them. More fluid capacity, more efficient cooling characteristics, machined surface, thicker wall material, easier drain and fill locations and a custom look all make the covers worth their $220 price tag (black powdercoated. Cast finish covers retail for $180 and polished covers retail for $290).

Stock differential covers typify the "lowest bidder" adage. Stock differential covers are usually constructed of stamped steel, which has poor heat transfer ability, minimal durability and can often leak after prolonged life.

PML's cast covers (also offered are a full line of transmission pans and valve covers) are aluminum with raised fins, which dissipates heat much better than steel. The covers are also made of thicker wall material for increased durability against impact. The thicker casting also prevents the flange from bending when the bolts are torqued, preventing leaks. The PML covers also create more volume in the differential for more oil capacity, which results in lower operating temperatures.

Installation of a PML differential cover is simple. Just remove the stock cover, scrape away the old gasket material, clean the differential flange surface, apply a bead of black RTV silicone gasket to the new cover's flange and bolt into place. PML covers feature oil fill openings and drains complete with magnetic plugs-something most factory covers don't have.

We've installed PML covers on several of our project vehicles. Why? Because anytime we have the opportunity to prolong moving parts like a truck's rear end, we take it-especially when we increase the power and torque output on our trucks. PML's covers are a bolt-on product that, while you'd never know it's there without seeing it, will give you years of extended service from your truck.

You can't go wrong with that.
