GM Classic Gauge Cluster Repair

Published in the November 2017 Issue September 2018 Feature Rick Sosebee

Once the stepper motors and back lighting was in place it was time to install the gauge cluster face and reinstall this entire section back over the printed circuit board. While we were operating on the gauges we also decided that a new look would be in order so we contacted US Speedo for a fresh look using their Aqua Edition Stainless Steel Speedometer kit (part number: #AQGM03) for 2003-05 GM/Chevy trucks.

The US Speedo gauge face kit is very easy to install. The gauge face is held onto the panel via several small plastic tabs. Lift the original cover or face off and you are ready to install the US Speedo faceplate.

The kits come complete with new color-matched needles as well as several tools to make the install easier. These include the small plastic tool to lift the original needles off the stepper motors and even cloth gloves to ensure you do not leave fingerprints everywhere.

US Speedo offers custom logo engraving on their gauge face kits as well and this was a perfect spot for the Diesel Tech logo. The Aqua Edition Stainless Steel with the blue background turned out very nice and seems to be a good match for the GM Arrival Blue color of the truck.

Once the gauge cluster had been reassembled Eric tested the gauges on his specially-built testing table. Testing consisted of running through some of the normal operations of the cluster like speed and temp sensing; everything checked out and the repairs were pronounced complete and successful.

If you would like to try rebuilding your cluster yourself and own a 2001-2007 GM truck, Merchant Automotive has the parts you need (part numbers: stepper motor - #10194;

cluster bulb - #10079). US Speedo makes gauge face kits for many vehicles also, so look these two up when upgrading the gauges in your truck.
