Six-Five Revive

Diesel tuning before GM went Duramax

Published in the August 2008 Issue August 2008 Column

Looking at this truck from the outside it appears to be like most early Chevy trucks you would see in almost any town in the country. The only things that give this truck away as even being a diesel is the larger exhaust and the two square holes in the bumper which are only used on 6.5L models. In fact, if you were to pull up next to this vehicle you probably wouldn't give a second look. That is, until the light turns green and it jumps off the line. You see, this old diesel has a little surprise in store for anyone wanting to get into it between stop lights. Under the hood sits a completely worked-over engine with more than just blue and grey paint.

The owner wanted to build a 6.5L truck that would have the power and longevity to hang with most late model trucks. He started out with a rebuilt 6.5L engine housing ceramic-coated pistons, balanced and blueprinted rotating assembly, slightly worked heads, ARP head stud kit and ceramic-coated exhaust manifolds. In order to keep the color from peeling under the high heat of the motor, he had the valve covers, intake manifold, turbo and thermostat housing all ceramic-coated as well by Performance Coatings in Auburn, WA. Ceramic coating will hold up much better than even high temp engine paint on things like turbochargers and exhaust manifolds. To help keep the engine running at a safe temperature they installed a high volume water pump.
